4 REASONS TO CHOOSE EMPIRE FROM COUNCIL GROWERS:
DROUGHT HARDINESS- Empire Zoysia does not necessarily use less irrigation, but when the dry times come and water restrictions are tightened one turfgrass will stand out. The Empire is tougher than St. Augustine and will survive. Initially, the St. Augustine will stay greener in a drought , and the Empire will go into a dormant state and turn off color. As the drought worsens, the St. Augustine will eventually start to turn brown. Once rain or irrigation arrives, the Empire will green back up, where as the St. Augustine will either come back weakened or will not come back at all. Will the grass survive north of the Tampa Bay Area? (Will the cold harm it?) No, Empire is grown all over the southeast. It will turn brown from freezing temperatures or frost, but it is not dead. Warmer weather will green it right back up.
Is Empire salt tolerant? If your yard is right on Tampa Bay, and floods often, then I would avoid this grass. That being said, there are few grasses more salt tolerant. Salt spray or occasional water intrusion are not a problem.
Can I grow Empire Turf in the Shade? Yes, light to moderate shade. At Council Growers, we feel like no turf grasses should be grown in full shade including Empire. Over time there is not one grass that we are aware of that will survive long term in heavy shade. If you keep your trees trimmed up and don't put the grass where you know it will struggle and not flourish, you will be ok.
I have dogs, can I use Empire? Empire is known for being extremely durable; more than mostany warm season turfgrass. If the dogs do wear a track in a given area, try to keep them off that section some to allow this grass to recover. On another note, dog urine will give your yard the "chicken pox" look. Is it fatal, no. We suggest "encouraging" your dogs to use other areas.
Should I herbicide and fertilize this grass like I did my St. Augustine? No, sign up for our seasonal maintenance updates over your email. Empire is tolerant to a number of herbicides for grass and broadleaf weed control. Always follow the label and look for Zoysia on the label before applying.
IS EMPIRE THE BEST GRASS FOR EVERY YARD? NO, there is no perfect grass for every lawn. Talk to us about all of your options before choosing a grass. We are very excited about helping you choose the right fit for your landscape.
